Being In the World But Not Of It

So many well-meaning believers don’t seem to know how to be the light of the world other than to point the finger at what isn’t Christian or Christian values. So many times we believers seem to think non-Christians should act Christian.

When it comes to voting, believers should desire to support the candidate that best supports good values and will help the country to be the best it can be, but let’s be real. We live in a secular country. We are not voting for an elder or pastor.

Is it possible that our own hearts are so judgmental that we can’t see any good in secular people? Should we abdicate our privilege of voting because the people running for president act less righteous than we do even though they might help the country? General George Patton was a ruthless man but he knew how to win a war. Should only nice people become generals of our armies?

I think our ability to see the good in people is one reason so many in the church have little or no influence with lost people. Maybe if we truly loved people, in spite of their flaws, they might listen to our words about God’s grace.

Before you refuse to vote for the best out of the two remaining candidates, we should consider that we have a chance to influence our culture for good, even when the good is limited. Our votes make a difference, and if we choose not to vote we are making a difference by not voting. God help us if we get a government that is worse than the last one because so many refused to take responsibility for living in a free country. Shame on us if we refuse to choose when so many men and women have shed blood for our freedom to choose.
