We have been seeing violence on the daily news lately with all the chaos and protesting on university campuses in America, which in my mind is the result of poor parenting. The rioting of students on the university campuses is not a surprise given that parents have believed in the lie that providing college for their kids is the best way to love their kids. This, I believe, is a clear deception of Satan. When parents turn over their children to atheistic teachers to be indoctrinated in twisted and evil thinking, the end result is that their children become God haters who no longer understand how to reason truth from error.

When Reason No Longer Resembles Truth
Whenever I set aside time to meet with God and hear his voice through his word it never seems to fail that I sense the Holy Spirit directing my thoughts, and feeling how to love the Father and understand him better than I did before. How you approach your time with God and his word can either change you for good or just be white noise in a life filled with many voices.
I have learned over the years to anticipate God meeting me with his thoughts, especially when I open the word of God and “HUNT” for what the Holy Spirit wants me to read and digest. I think it’s easy to sit down with scripture and merely “READ” as if I’m just reading the newspaper or some boring journal. Our attitude makes all the difference in the world.
It takes practice to avoid getting a “STALLED” attitude before reading the word of God because we can approach scripture with the attitude with “I have read this before” and instead of having an attitude of Holy Spirit I want to know your thoughts today. Let me say it again, our approach of how we sit down with God’s word makes all the difference in the world.
When you think about the fact that God has said many times that he is after our heart most of all, you can realize that it’s easy to shield our hearts from God’s influence without realizing it or even intending it, if we are not careful. Scripture says the heart is incredibly “DECEITFUL,” meaning that the heart can, and often does, get twisted. It’s hard to know someone’s heart, but not so with God. The weird thing is we can’t even understand our own heart without the help of God because he doesn’t just look at surface things in our life. He looks at the depth of our heart, which generally is hidden from sight. For that very reason we should want his inspection and input.
The interesting thing is that the prophet Jeremiah communicated to Judah how well they knew the law of God yet failed to truly embrace it by doing it and thus purposefully disobeying God. This is why he stated the famous quote about the heart being deceitful.
Jeremiah 17:9
“The heart is deceitful” above all else and is desperately sick. Who can understand it?
When reading this verse it’s easy to build a doctrine that everyone’s heart is deceitful. That is not what it says if we read the context in which it is written. In context Jeremiah states that Judah knew how to live, but refused to live the way God directed. God stated in the previous few verses that he would bless them if they trusted in him, so not every heart is deceitful, but only those who refuse to trust God, whether directly or indirectly,. Our hearts are only as deceitful as we allow them to be based on how much we honestly trust God or don’t. God always puts forth the promise of blessings for trusting him before he puts the promise of being cursed if we don’t.
Jeremiah 17:7
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD and whose confidence is in the LORD.
A few verses later we find the revelation that God tests the human heart to see what we really believe vs. what we just say we believe. God is not fooled by our religious words or even our religious activities. He looks deeper, at the core of our heart and thus deals with us based on the “REAL” us. From my perspective we want God to be impressed by our religious activities more than by our intent.
Jeremiah 17:10
“I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.
Going back to my beginning statement about my time in God’s word, I try to consciously adjust my attitude before reading to acknowledge the fact that God is after my heart, and I “WANT” to have a good heart. I adjust my heart to anticipate God’s willingness to help me align with what his word is about to reveal to me, and lo and behold I have an intimate time with God. I sense his desire to help me, not hurt me, and that makes all the difference in the world.
Take for instance a verse in the Old Testament law about our attitude towards our neighbor. God says we should not “HATE” our neighbor because they have done something wrong to us, but we should openly confront the problem with them. The point being: don’t let your heart become bitter, but be open about your conflicts so your heart stays healthy. So often when counseling people I uncover an attitude of bitterness because someone has offended them, but they didn’t address the problem so the offense poisoned their heart .
Leviticus 19:17
You shall not hate your neighbor in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him.
God is warning us that if we don’t deal with offenses correctly our hearts become poisoned and we incur sin because of it. Our hearts stay healthy when we follow God’s advice and can become unhealthy when we don’t.
Returning back to the beginning statement about hearing from God when reading his word, I can hear from God from his word as long as my heart is in the right state. If I have poisoned my heart with resentment towards someone because I handled that offense incorrectly, then the first place I need to start before reading the word is to confess my wrong to God. By confessing my sin God doesn’t have to reprove me because I judge myself. The apostle John, near the end of his life at about 90 years old, made it clear how believers should handle sin after being born again. But, many professing Christians neglect that advice then wonder why they can’t get much out of reading the word of God, or hear God’s voice.
1 John 1:9-10
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
John says stop pretending and start confessing. Pretty simple advice. Then why is it we fail to follow through with what he says? Maybe because we have become somewhat stubborn in our hearts God withholds his intimacy and fellowship, and remains silent when we seek him or pray.
God will speak to me and you when we approach him with humble hearts, refusing to hide anything from him. He will speak to us through his word, or through the Holy Spirit when our hearts are tender and moldable. So the question is: how is your heart condition today?
Questions:
1) When you read God’s word are you approaching it with hunger and humility, or haphazardly? James 4:10 says how and why God moves.
2) Have you regularly submitted your heart for inspection by the Lord? John 16:13 says the Holy Spirit will be our counselor if we listen to him.
May our time in God’s word be filled with expectation,

Feeling Like No One Cares?
Life has a way of making you feel like no one cares about what you are going through. Sometimes even God seems included in that. You can be in a crowd of people and still feel overwhelmed by the sense of abandonment. Even when the facts speak loudly, our feeling can overwhelm us.
Times like that are a part of the human experience even though we have good friendships with others and call our selves Christians who believe God loves us. Nevertheless, we can still find ourselves isolated in our souls. Our minds tell us one thing yet our feelings tell us something totally different and those emotions sometimes scream the loudest.
In those times, we need a foundation in our souls that can weather the storm we find ourselves in. That foundation won’t be successful if we try to establish it when we are in the storm but has to be established and relied on when we are centered and calm. It’s during the calm time that we prepare, not during the storm.
There is a story in the book of Luke where Martha is going through a storm in her soul. She “FEELS” now one cares, even though she “knows” otherwise. One of the few references about Martha is where Jesus is said to “LOVED” Lazarus, Martha and Mary. We all assumed Jesus loved people, especially his disciples, but John goes out of his way to state it in no uncertain terms because John had just written that Lazarus was dying and yet Jesus stayed where he was and didn’t go see him or pray for him, which seemed contrary to acting in love.
John 11:5
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
We all have a problem in reading people’s response in life as it relates to us and others. We misread people’s intentions and motives, which leads us to wrong conclusions. Because we can’t read peoples minds we assume things that may or may not be there and then our friendships go through the proverbial storm. I guess we all go through times like that and Martha was no exception.
One day Martha finds herself hosting a meal in her home. The fact that she opened her home to Jesus also meant she opened her home to his disciples and those that accompanied him. Luke tells us there were many people that traveled with Jesus, both men and women, so it’s not hard to believe that there could have been 20-30 full time followers going from town to town with Jesus.
Luke 8:1-3
Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance.
Now, in this one time at Martha’s house, she was responsible to make sure everything was prepared and ready. In her business she gets overwhelmed by the responsibility and gets irritated with her sister Mary whom she thinks should shoulder the burden of the event with her. Yet Mary seemed captivated by Jesus speaking. Martha tells Mary to come help yet Mary was too focused on listening so she couldn’t hear her sisters stress or request.
I have to believe all of us have been in similar places where we seem to see a need and no one else sees the situation the same way we do and it ends up making us frustrated. Unchecked the frustration can spill over to speaking words we shouldn’t have said, which insulates us more than before and leads to loneliness.
Martha is in the storm of her life when she just wanted to be a blessing to Jesus. Sometimes we intend to do the right thing and it only ends up blowing up into a mess. It is in these times that we either overcome or are overcome.
Martha, at this time, felt the stress of her chosen responsibilities were ignored not only by her sister but Jesus as well. How often have we been overcome to think God doesn’t care because he didn’t produce some miracle to make it all better?
Luke 10:40
But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.
If you know this story you know many pastors and teachers criticize Martha’s and make Mary look like a saint yet I see so much more in the story. First, remember scripture says that Jesus loved Lazarus, Martha and Mary. It didn’t say just her brother and sister Mary but all three of them. That is the foundational truth that Martha needed to keep a hold of in her stress and help her gain perspective. Secondly, Martha’s relationship with Jesus was solid enough for her to speak her mind and thoughts to him even if those thoughts and feelings were right or wrong. If we really love God and believe he loves us we should feel the liberty to speak honestly in prayer with him rather than pretending. Often counseled people who are struggling in their relationship with God need to find some open field somewhere and scream their hearts out to God even if it sounds bad because God loves honesty not pious words.
Martha asks the million dollar question to Jesus about whether he “CARED” about her frustration and relational problem with Mary. I have to believe Martha expected Jesus to do something about the problem without her saying anything about it. We do the same thing when trouble comes our way. We often cry out to God and ask “Don’t You Care” because we thought if he did he would fix things either before they happen or right after they happen.
When Jesus answered Mary he doesn’t rebuke her or condemn her. Instead, he says “Martha Martha,” which is like saying I do care. Jesus was showing affection to Martha, not rebuke. Then he identifies the problem of Martha’s pain. It was “WORRY”, not things like food and drink or cushions or lighting. We often let our feelings override our good judgment when dealing with tough issues. Martha let worry captivate her heart when she was trying to do a good thing by being hospitable.
Luke 10:41-42
And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.
Jesus was not saying that Mary is the better person at the time but Mary saw what was most important – The Words of Jesus. Maybe the Holy Spirit is speaking to you or someone you know about their focus in the storm right now? We can’t avoid the storms of life but we can keep our focus on Jesus in the storm.
If you have lost your focus like Martha today, refocus on the person that loves you the most even though “HE” is not fixing the problem right now. Trust him to walk you through the storm until the storm passes and you once again are feeling blessed and happy in the Lord. Your focus and trust will either set you free in Jesus or enslave you if you keep looking at what’s wrong in your life.
One of my favorite verses that helps me to get refocused is in Proverbs 3:5-8
Proverbs 3:5-8
Trust the LORD with all your heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding. Remember the LORD in all you do, and he will give you success.
Don’t depend on your own wisdom. Respect the LORD and refuse to do wrong. Then your body will be healthy and your bones will be strong!
Questions:
1) Do you find yourself struggling with trusting that God really loves you because of troubles? One of the best things to do is VERBALLY cry out to God in prayer while being brutally honest.
2) Do your worries seem to captivate your heart even more lately? One of the best scriptures to rely on is James 4:7, which identifies the cause and solution.
Trusting that God LOVES us,
Pastor Dale
There should be times in our faith journey were we have encounters with God that are considered special in the eyes of God. In those times God expects that we will “RESPECT” him in a higher way in those encounters. My belief is that many don’t know they are experiencing a special time with God because of distractions in their lives. We can be so caught up in the complexity of our lives that we don’t notice God is doing something special for us and around us.
