Recently, Sue and I took our two boy grandkids to see the new movie “The Star” and found it so encouraging that I wanted to encourage as many of you who have young kids to make the time and go see it. If you miss it in the theater, buy the DVD.

What I appreciated about the movie was that it not only presented the story of Jesus being born, but presented the story Joseph and Mary embracing their calling in a difficult world.

The use of animals that could talk created such a wonderful texture for children and adults that again made the journey of bringing Jesus to birth special. I think to often we sanitize the story of the birth of Jesus as if they the people involved had no struggles of difficulties but that everything was supernaturally supplied. The birth of Jesus was definitely supernatural, but also difficult for all involved. The animals brought out the natural side of the need to make the effort in life even when God is involved.

The reminds me a a passage of Scripture that speaks about all of us discovering and embracing our calling in God:

2 Thessalonians 1:11

And so we keep on praying for you, that our God will make you worthy of the life to which He called you. And we pray that God, by His power, will fulfill all your good intentions and faithful deeds.

My prayer for all of us in 2018 is that we would discover God’s calling in our lives. That we would not let discouragement, roadblocks or detours along the way derail our high calling in Christ, but serve the purpose of God will all our hearts. May we honor God’s investment in us and thus live a worthy life.
